Lakewood Golf Club is one of Alabama's most historic golf facilities: two 18-hole courses, Azalea and Dogwood, both originally designed by Perry Maxwell and opened in 1947 as part of the storied Grand Hotel on Mobile Bay (now the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection, operated by Marriott). The resort has hosted presidents, dignitaries, and, more recently, the 2021 U.S. Senior Women's Amateur, and joined the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in 2005.

Unlike a typical resort course that is purely a hotel amenity, Lakewood offers a genuine private membership structure of its own -- a Regular Golf category carrying a $40,000 initiation fee for members 40 and older, plus Junior Golf and Non-Resident categories at $20,000, each with modest monthly dues. Several gated residential developments -- Colony at the Grand (developed by Daniel Communities beginning 2004), Cottages at Point Clear, and Point Clear Woods -- have been built directly adjacent to and overlooking the Azalea course, though none of the sources reviewed here confirm that homeownership in any of them includes club membership.

Golf & Course

Azalea and Dogwood are both Perry Maxwell designs (Azalea later touched by Ron Garl, Dogwood by Joe Lee), giving Lakewood real design pedigree distinct from most RTJ Trail sites, most of which are newer Robert Trent Jones Sr. designs. The resort's 1947 opening makes it one of the oldest continuously operating golf facilities on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Membership & Access

Does buying a home here include club membership?

No — homeownership does not automatically include membership. See details below.

Most play at Lakewood happens as resort/hotel-guest golf through the Grand Hotel. Separately, the club sells its own private membership (Regular/Junior/Non-Resident Golf categories) open to anyone who applies and pays the fee -- membership is not restricted to, or included with, ownership in any of the adjacent residential developments.

Living in Lakewood Golf Club

Colony at the Grand is the most substantial adjacent development -- a gated community of condos and homes developed by Daniel Communities beginning in 2004 on land contiguous to the Grand Hotel and its golf courses, explicitly affiliated with the hotel's amenities. Cottages at Point Clear and Point Clear Woods are smaller gated communities marketed on their views of and proximity to the Azalea course.

Lifestyle & Amenities

As a full resort, Lakewood/the Grand Hotel complex offers tennis, aquatics, fitness, spa, and dining well beyond golf -- a broader resort-lifestyle amenity base than most Gulf Coast clubs.
