Sherwood Country Club, inside the guard-gated Lake Sherwood community in the Santa Monica Mountains west of Thousand Oaks, is one of the Los Angeles basin's most tournament-storied private clubs. Its Jack Nicklaus-designed course has hosted three separate marquee professional events across three different decades, giving it a national golf profile that punches above its relatively modest public visibility as a private, invitation-only club.

Golf & Course

The course is a Jack Nicklaus signature design with a Georgian-style clubhouse. It hosted Greg Norman's Shark Shootout team event every year from the tournament's 1989 inception through 1999 (11 consecutive years) before the event moved to Tiburón Golf Club in Naples, FL. It then hosted the World Challenge, a PGA Tour-recognized event hosted by Tiger Woods each December from 2000 to 2013 (Woods won the event 5 times on this course). In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the PGA Tour's Zozo Championship out of Japan, the tournament relocated to Sherwood CC, where Tiger Woods won.

Membership & Access

Does buying a home here include club membership?

No — homeownership does not automatically include membership. See details below.

Membership is invitation-only with a reportedly rigorous vetting process. The club offers a Golf Membership (full access to the golf course and all club facilities) and a separate Club Membership (tennis, pickleball, pool, fitness center, spa, dining, and social events, but no golf access; reported $25,000 non-refundable initiation per aggregator sourcing, unconfirmed by the club). Buying a home in Lake Sherwood does not appear to include or require Sherwood CC membership -- research found the club described as a legally and administratively separate private entity from the surrounding residential community/HOA(s).

Living in Sherwood Country Club

Lake Sherwood is an exclusive, guard-gated community of roughly 660 residences comprising a guard-gated golf-club tract, several separately electronic-gated enclaves, and lake-view homes along Lake Sherwood Drive. Past and recent homeowners have included William Randolph Hearst (historically), and more recently Wayne Gretzky, Paul Anka, Pete Sampras, and Britney Spears. See the Lake Sherwood community record for further detail.
