Kaanapali vs. Wailea: Comparing Maui's Two Public-Access Golf Resorts

Kaanapali (West Maui) and Wailea (South Maui) are both public/resort-accessible golf complexes wrapped by real, developer-built residential communities, but the way homeownership connects to golf differs meaningfully between them.

Golf access and membership

Neither corridor requires membership to play - both operate primarily as public/resort daily-fee golf. The difference is what, if anything, comes with the surrounding real estate: Kaanapali Golf Estates ownership carries no golf-related benefit at all (green fees are the same for residents and any other paying golfer), while Wailea Golf Club runs a legally documented membership-eligibility system limited to owners in 13 specifically designated Wailea developments, with other properties eligible for a lesser Property Owner Rate.

Golf course scale and history

Kaanapali's Royal Course (1962, Robert Trent Jones Sr.) is Maui's oldest resort course, part of Hawaii's first master-planned resort; together with the Kai Course it totals 36 holes. Wailea's three courses (Gold, Emerald, Blue/Old Blue) total 54 holes, making it the island's largest single golf complex, with the Gold and Emerald courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.

Residential density and product

Kaanapali's golf-residential tie is concentrated in one enclave, Kaanapali Golf Estates (77 parcels, with further-gated sub-neighborhoods Lanikeha, the Vintage, the Summit, and the Pinnacle). Wailea's Old Blue Course corridor is considerably denser, with four separate gated communities built directly along its fairways over four decades (Wailea Fairway Estates, Wailea Golf Estates, Kai Malu, and Wailea Golf Vistas), offering a wider range of housing types from small-lot estates to attached duplex product.
