Oyster Harbors Club occupies the entirety of Grand Island, a single-bridge-access peninsula in Osterville village that changed its name from Grand Island to Oyster Harbors when the club and its residential community were laid out together in the 1920s. The Olmsted Brothers planned the island's roads and site, and Donald Ross built the golf course in 1926 (he went on to serve as the club's vice president); Tom Doak's Renaissance Golf Design restored the course to closer to its original character in 2009. Roughly 400 homes sit on the island today, all reachable only through the club's single guarded bridge entrance -- there is no other way in or out, and non-members and non-residents cannot access the island at all.
For a golf-oriented buyer, Oyster Harbors is the clearest Massachusetts example of a residential community and a private club functioning as a single physical and social unit, even without a literal deed-linked membership. Club membership is invitation- and sponsorship-based, not automatically granted with a home purchase, but a buyer on Grand Island is, by definition, buying into the same guarded, single-entrance world as the club.
Golf & Course
The 18-hole course was carved from dense woods on what was then Grand Island; Donald Ross's characteristic undulating, complex greens compensate for otherwise gentle terrain. A 2009 restoration by Tom Doak's Renaissance Golf Design brought the course closer to its 1926 character.
Membership & Access
Does buying a home here include club membership?
Membership at Oyster Harbors Club is invitation- and sponsorship-based rather than something a home purchase automatically includes -- prospective members, including new residents, must be proposed and accepted through the club's own process. The physical gating is absolute: Grand Island has one bridge and one guarded entrance, and non-members/non-residents cannot get onto the island at all, which is a much stronger form of golf-community integration than a typical gated subdivision even without a formal ownership-to-membership bundle.
