Canyon River Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 public course in East Missoula, designed by Schmidt-Curley (Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt) and opened for play in July 2006. It occupies part of Bandmann Flats, a roughly 400-acre site bordered on three sides by the Clark Fork River. The course was built as the centerpiece of the Canyon River Golf Community, a master-planned development of 270 homes -- documented in local reporting at the time of its launch as explicitly organized around the course and clubhouse rather than the course being an amenity added to pre-existing housing.

Ownership of the underlying golf-and-development project changed hands in December 2012, when a group of investors (Rick Orizotti, Terry O'Keefe, and Mark Burnham, operating as Canyon River Properties) bought the course and the surrounding development out of the original developer entity, Canyon River Development LLC, and pursued a new residential sales strategy. The community today includes single-family homes, townhomes, and remaining vacant homesite lots managed by a Canyon River Golf Community HOA.

Golf & Course

The 6,900-yard, par-72 course opened in July 2006 and was rated #9 new course in the nation in 2007 and #1 in Montana in 2008 by national golf-course rating publications. It meanders through pines and native grasslands, with lakes and riparian marshes coming into play on several holes.

Membership & Access

Does buying a home here include club membership?

No — homeownership does not automatically include membership. See details below.

Canyon River is a public course with tee times bookable up to three days in advance; there is no membership product. Residents of the surrounding Canyon River Golf Community do get a distinct homeowner rate that does not apply to outside guests, a real if modest form of golf-residential integration, but this is a discounted-rate benefit, not a deeded or included membership -- it was not found to be tied to the property title itself.

What Buyers Should Verify

  • Confirm the frequently cited '180-acre' course-only acreage figure directly -- this research could only independently verify the roughly 400-acre total development site (Bandmann Flats), not a course-specific acreage.
  • Confirm current gated/access status of the residential streets directly with the HOA -- this research found no evidence either way.
  • Confirm the current homeowner golf rate structure and whether any other resident-specific golf benefits exist, directly with the club.
  • Confirm current HOA dues directly with the Canyon River Golf Community HOA -- not found in this research.

Notable

  • Rated #9 new golf course in the nation in 2007 and #1 in Montana in 2008 by national golf-course rating outlets.
  • The development changed ownership in December 2012, when a local investor group (Canyon River Properties) bought the course and residential project from the original developer, Canyon River Development LLC.
  • The course was designed by Schmidt-Curley Design (Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt), an internationally active golf-architecture firm.
