Connect With a Local Real Estate Specialist

Mountain Ridge Country Club is a private, members-only Donald Ross design that opened in 1931 on a 250-acre ridge site in West Caldwell after the club relocated from its earlier West Orange location. Ross himself attended the June 1931 dedication of the new course and the Clifford Wendehack-designed clubhouse, and a 2009 Ron Prichard-led restoration worked to return the course to Ross's original routing and green complexes.

An earlier characterization of this club claimed it had 'hosted a PGA Championship' -- language this research corrects. No evidence surfaced of Mountain Ridge hosting the national PGA Championship (the major championship run by the PGA of America). What the club has genuinely hosted, and what should be cited instead, is the New Jersey State PGA Championship four times (most recently 2017) -- a real but state-level PGA of America event, not the national major -- alongside three Metropolitan Opens, two Metropolitan Amateurs, and the MGA's 2007 Ike Championship. Its strongest national-tier credentials are the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur and, more recently, the 2020 LPGA Cognizant Founders Cup, a genuine LPGA Tour event. Like its Essex County peers, it is a freestanding private club rather than a bundled residential-development anchor.

What Buyers Should Verify

  • If any published source is found claiming Mountain Ridge hosted the national PGA Championship, treat it with skepticism -- this research could not substantiate that claim and found only the New Jersey State PGA Championship (a distinct, state-level event) in its place.
  • Confirm current initiation fee, dues, and membership category structure directly with the club -- no figures were found this session.

Notable

  • CORRECTED: no evidence found of Mountain Ridge hosting the national PGA Championship, despite an earlier claim to that effect -- its genuine PGA of America credential is the New Jersey State PGA Championship, hosted four times, most recently 2017.
  • Hosted the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur Championship and the 2020 LPGA Cognizant Founders Cup.
  • Donald Ross design (1931); Ross attended the course and clubhouse dedication in person.
  • 2009 Ron Prichard restoration returned the course toward Ross's original design intent.
