Garden City Golf Club traces to May 1897, when a nine-hole "Island Golf Links" opened for guests of the Garden City Hotel, designed by Devereux Emmet; the course was soon expanded to 18 holes -- briefly the longest course in the country -- and incorporated under its current name in 1899. The clubhouse was designed by architect Richard Howland Hunt. The club's championship history is substantial: it hosted the 1902 U.S. Open, the U.S. Amateur in 1900, 1908, 1913, and 1936, and the 1924 Walker Cup.

Garden City Golf Club remains one of the few explicitly men-only golf clubs left in the United States, with membership deliberately capped at 399 -- reportedly to stay under a 400-member threshold that would trigger additional New York State equal-access provisions for private clubs. It sits inside the historic, planned Incorporated Village of Garden City alongside two other private clubs with similar names (the separate Garden City Country Club and the Cherry Valley Club) -- a genuine identity-verification risk this record has been checked against.
