The Seawane Club opened in 1927 on the Hewlett Bay estate of John Auerbach, whose Victorian mansion served as the club's original clubhouse. Devereux Emmet's design carved a true links-style layout across the meadow and marsh bordering Hewlett Bay -- 18 holes and roughly 200 bunkers, with almost no trees, much of it built on land reclaimed from the surrounding marsh. Stephen Kay (1988) and Doug Smith/Alfred H. Tull carried out later work. The club's name derives from "Seawane," an anglicization of a Native American word for copper beads found in a 1914 grave discovery on the Auerbach estate.
