Raleigh Country Club occupies a unique place in golf history as the final course Donald Ross designed before his death in 1948; it opened for play in 1949 with an exhibition by Sam Snead. The club faced financial distress in the early 2000s — serious enough that a sale for residential redevelopment was reportedly considered — before McConnell Golf founder John McConnell purchased it in 2003 specifically to preserve it, making it one of four classic Ross designs (alongside Sedgefield, Country Club of Asheville, and Holston Hills) in the McConnell Golf portfolio.

Golf & Course

The course underwent a $5.5 million restoration led by architect Kyle Franz, funded entirely by McConnell Golf, beginning February 2020 and reopening November 6, 2020 — greens were expanded, bunkers rebuilt, and roughly 500 trees removed to restore Ross's original strategic intent. Ellis Maples served as the club's first Director of Golf, and Arnold Palmer played the course as a collegian.

Membership & Access

Does buying a home here include club membership?

No — homeownership does not automatically include membership. See details below.

Private membership through McConnell Golf's network model (non-equity, dues-based access to the McConnell portfolio of clubs); exact current initiation fee and dues were not published or independently confirmed this session. No residential development is bundled to the club — it is a freestanding facility at 400 Donald Ross Drive, Raleigh.

Notable

  • The course is Donald Ross's final design; he died in 1948 while it was being completed, and it opened for play in 1949.
  • Address: 400 Donald Ross Drive, Raleigh, NC — named for the course's architect.
  • Purchased in 2003 by John McConnell specifically to preserve the club after a period of financial distress that reportedly included interest in the land for residential redevelopment — implying the club is not, and was never converted into, a residential-bundled development.
  • Completed a $5.5 million Kyle Franz-led restoration in 2020.
