Connect With a Local Specialist

Cleveland and Akron's golf-residential landscape closely mirrors the pattern found in Illinois and Columbus, Ohio: a deep bench of century-old, member-owned private clubs -- Canterbury Golf Club, Shaker Heights Country Club, Portage Country Club, Kirtland Country Club, and Mayfield Sand Ridge Club among them -- that carry real local prestige and, in several cases, national championship pedigree, but that grew up organically inside already-affluent, pre-existing Cleveland and Akron suburbs rather than as developer-built residential products. None of those clubs anchor a platted, gated, or membership-bundled residential community, so this research does not publish them as golf-living anchors.

The one development in the market that does clear that bar is Signature of Solon in Solon (southeast Cuyahoga County): a gated, 600-acre, 350-plus home community built around an 18-hole Craig Schreiner-designed course, where the recorded Declaration of Covenants requires every homeowner to carry at least a Social Club Membership at Signature of Solon Country Club -- a real, court-tested bundling arrangement. That makes Cleveland/Akron, for golf-living purposes, a market defined by one clear developer-anchored product set against a much larger population of prestigious but residentially unconnected private clubs, rather than a deep corridor of bundled golf communities.

Akron's Firestone Country Club -- a former WGC-Bridgestone Invitational host and three-time PGA Championship venue -- was evaluated closely as a potential destination-exception qualifier given its national tournament pedigree, but research found its ClubCorp/Invited Clubs membership structure explicitly markets a 'National Membership' tier aimed at people living outside Ohio or more than 100 miles from the club, and no developer-built residential community organized around it -- the surrounding Firestone Park neighborhood predates and is unrelated to the golf club, both merely sharing the Firestone company name. It is not published as a golf-living anchor here.

Golf Character

The market's golf identity is split between historic, major-championship-caliber private clubs concentrated in and around Cleveland's inner-ring suburbs (Canterbury, Shaker Heights, Portage, Mayfield Sand Ridge) and Akron's own championship venue (Firestone), plus one modern, purpose-built golf-residential development (Signature of Solon) in the outer southeast suburbs.

Membership & Access Patterns

Access to golf in this market runs the full spectrum. At the old-guard private clubs (Canterbury, Shaker Heights, Portage, Kirtland, Mayfield Sand Ridge), membership is by application/invitation and is entirely independent of where a member lives -- buying a nearby home confers no membership right. At Firestone, membership is available to both local residents (Premium/Classic tiers) and out-of-area golfers (the National tier, explicitly for those outside Ohio or beyond 100 miles), but again is not tied to home purchase. Signature of Solon is the market's one genuine exception: a recorded HOA covenant makes at least a Social Club Membership mandatory for every homeowner, though full golf access remains a further, optional, separately priced tier.

Housing & Community Patterns

Signature of Solon home prices span roughly $350,000 for attached/condo product up to luxury estate sales above $1 million within the gated community. Housing near the market's old-guard clubs (Shaker Heights, Beachwood/Canterbury's area, Akron's Portage Path corridor) reflects those cities' own long-established, high-value residential character rather than any golf-community pricing structure.

Geography & Getting Around

The market spans five counties across Greater Cleveland and Akron: Cuyahoga (Cleveland, Solon, Shaker Heights, Beachwood), Summit (Akron), Geauga and Lake (exurban/rural northeast suburbs including Kirtland and Chardon-area Munson Township), and Medina (southwest exurban Cleveland/Akron). Solon, home to Signature of Solon, sits roughly 20 miles southeast of downtown Cleveland.

Nearby Alternative Markets

Columbus Metro, roughly two hours south, is Ohio's other confirmed concentration of genuine developer-anchored golf communities (Muirfield Village, New Albany Country Club).

What Buyers Should Verify

  • Confirm current Signature of Solon HOA dues and club membership costs directly, as neither is publicly published.
  • Re-verify Firestone Country Club's membership structure periodically, as ClubCorp/Invited Clubs properties periodically revise tier names and geographic eligibility rules.

Notable

  • Canterbury Golf Club (Beachwood) is one of only two clubs nationally to have hosted all five U.S. major championships (U.S. Open, PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open, U.S. Amateur, and Senior PGA Championship-era events).
  • Firestone Country Club (Akron) hosted the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational (1999-2018, with gaps) and three PGA Championships (1960, 1966, 1975), but its membership structure and surrounding neighborhood show no developer-driven residential tie, so it is not published as a golf-living anchor here.
  • Signature of Solon's Declaration of Covenants, recorded with the Cuyahoga County Fiscal Office, has been actively enforced in Ohio courts (Francis v. Signature of Solon HOA Bd. of Trustees).
