Muirfield Village Golf Club is Ohio's most nationally significant golf address and, structurally, its most unusual golf-living case. Jack Nicklaus and Muirfield Ltd. acquired the land in 1966, began construction in 1972, and opened the Nicklaus/Desmond Muirhead-designed course in May 1974 -- the same year the first homes in the surrounding Muirfield Village community went on sale. The course has hosted the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament, founded by Nicklaus, every year since 1976, and is the only golf course in the world to have hosted all three major team competitions involving American teams: the 1987 Ryder Cup, the 1998 Solheim Cup, and the 2013 Presidents Cup.

What makes Muirfield Village unusual among Ohio's golf-living candidates is not membership bundling -- there is none -- but the depth of its physical and historical integration with the community around it. Muirfield Village the neighborhood (roughly 2,400 homes today, governed by the Muirfield Association) was platted, developed, and sold concurrently with the golf club as a single Nicklaus-led vision: 'a world-class golf course surrounded by a premier residential community.' Yet primary sourcing -- the Muirfield Association's own resident FAQ -- confirms that 'although Muirfield has two beautiful golf courses within its boundaries, neither are a part of the Muirfield Association.' Buying a home in Muirfield Village does not include, and has never included, membership at MVGC. What it does include, funded through mandatory HOA assessments (a formula of $2.20 per $1,000 of a home's fair market value), is free resident access to a separate, much smaller 6-hole practice course with its own bunkers and water hazard, plus a large slate of non-golf recreational amenities (two pools, tennis and pickleball courts, a 14-acre nature preserve, 29 miles of pathways). A second, more accessible private club, The Country Club at Muirfield Village, also sits inside the community with its own, separate membership (see that club's own anchor record) -- so a homebuyer here is choosing among three distinct golf products (an elite invitation-only championship club, a family-oriented private club with its own 18-hole course, and a free resident practice course), none of them bundled to the deed.

Golf & Course

MVGC's 18-hole championship course (par 72, roughly 7,221 yards as currently configured) is ranked among Golf Digest's top 20 courses in America and has been periodically reworked by Nicklaus himself, most recently in a 2019-2021 renovation described by Nicklaus and the club as a deliberate hardening of the course ahead of a new generation of Memorial Tournament fields. The Memorial is now presented by Workday and is conducted, per the tournament's own stated mission, to honor individuals who have distinguished themselves in golf, to showcase elite competition, and to benefit Central Ohio charities.

Membership & Access

Does buying a home here include club membership?

No — homeownership does not automatically include membership. See details below.

Access to MVGC is invitation-only: prospective members must be sponsored by current members, and the club is widely reported (though not officially confirmed) to require a substantial net worth and six-figure initiation commitment. Homeownership in Muirfield Village -- including the golf-course-front lots and the small gated Estates enclave at the center of the course -- confers no membership rights or preference at MVGC; the club's own membership roster and application process are entirely separate from the HOA. Residents' only guaranteed, HOA-funded golf access is the free 6-hole practice course described above.

Living in Muirfield Village Golf Club

Muirfield Village is a roughly 2,400-home, non-gated master-planned community on Dublin's northern edge, built out from 1974 onward and still governed today by the Muirfield Association. Housing spans a wide range, from condominiums priced as low as the low $200,000s up to multi-million-dollar estates; recent market data put the community's overall median sale price at roughly $680,000. At the community's literal center sits The Estates at Muirfield Village, a small (about 22-home) gated enclave directly on the golf course where Jack Nicklaus himself and other prominent Columbus-area residents have owned homes -- notable as the one genuinely gated pocket within an otherwise open, HOA-governed neighborhood.

Lifestyle & Amenities

DiningPractice facility

The Muirfield Association funds and maintains two recreation complexes (Glick Road and Holbrook) with pools, tennis/pickleball courts, playgrounds, and a basketball court, plus a 14-acre nature preserve and 29 miles of paved pathways -- all included at no separate cost through mandatory HOA assessments. This non-golf recreational infrastructure, not club access, is the amenity every Muirfield Village homeowner is guaranteed.

Location & Surrounding Area

Muirfield Village sits in Dublin, Franklin County, on the northwestern edge of the Columbus metro -- convenient to Dublin's technology-corridor employers, US-33/I-270, and the broader Columbus Metro golf market alongside New Albany Country Club to the east.

What Buyers Should Verify

  • Confirm current MVGC initiation fee, annual dues, and sponsorship/net-worth requirements directly with the club -- all figures found this session were unofficial third-party estimates with a wide, unreconciled range.
  • Confirm current MVGC membership waitlist status and whether any historical founding-resident membership pathway still exists; none was found in sources reviewed this session.
  • Confirm the exact current HOA assessment rate and what it funds directly with the Muirfield Association before assuming the free practice-course amenity or recreation complexes are unchanged.

Notable

  • Muirfield Village Golf Club is the only course in the world to have hosted the Ryder Cup (1987), the Presidents Cup (2013), and the Solheim Cup (1998).
  • The Memorial Tournament, founded by Jack Nicklaus in 1976, has been played at Muirfield Village every year since -- one of the longest-running founder-hosted events on the PGA Tour.
  • The Muirfield Association's own resident FAQ confirms neither of the two golf clubs inside the community's boundaries is part of the homeowners association -- a fact independently verified for this record via the Association's own published FAQ page.
  • The Estates at Muirfield Village, a roughly 22-home gated enclave on the golf course at the community's center, is the one genuinely gated pocket inside the otherwise open ~2,400-home community.
