Philadelphia Country Club began in 1890 as a riding, driving, and polo club, adding a nine-hole golf course two years later; the club purchased its present Gladwyne property on Spring Mill Road in 1924. As one of the USGA's first six member clubs, it carries genuine founding-era significance in American golf and hosted the U.S. Open in 1939. Today it operates as a large, full-service, family-oriented private club: 27 holes of golf (an 18-hole championship course plus a 9-hole course), an Olympic-size pool, tennis and paddle courts, squash, a shooting lodge and range, and a roughly 100,000-square-foot clubhouse.
Location & Surrounding Area
Gladwyne, in Lower Merion Township, is one of the Main Line's most affluent residential communities, roughly 10 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
