Whitemarsh Valley Country Club sits on 125 acres purchased in 1892 by George C. Thomas (the elder), whose son George C. Thomas Jr. -- later a nationally significant course architect in his own right -- designed the club's original course. Founded in 1908, it hosted the 1917 Patriotic Open (played in place of that year's U.S. Open), the 1934 U.S. Women's Amateur, and, for eighteen consecutive years (1963-1980), the PGA Tour's Philadelphia IVB Classic, whose winners included Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus (three times), Tom Kite, and Tom Weiskopf. It operates today as a private, member-owned equity club.
