The Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort, built in 1911 on 250 private acres on an island in the Delaware River within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, is one of American golf's genuine founding sites. The Professional Golfers' Association of America was formed there in 1916, and the club's own promotional history refers to Shawnee as the 'Cradle of the PGA.' The Shawnee Open, first played in 1912, ran as a recognized PGA Tour event from 1916 through 1937 and continued for decades afterward, with more than 60 editions played in total. In 1938 Shawnee hosted the PGA Championship itself, where Paul Runyan defeated Sam Snead 8 and 7 in the final. The course -- a 27-hole layout across Red, White, and Blue nines -- was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, correcting an earlier association with Donald Ross found in the research brief's seed description; no Ross connection was found in this research. Ownership has passed through notable hands, including bandleader Fred Waring, who purchased and renamed the resort in 1943; it is currently owned by Charlie Kirkwood.

Golf & Course

27 holes across Red, White, and Blue nines, designed by A.W. Tillinghast, laid out partly on an island in the Delaware River -- a notable routing that has made the course itself a longstanding curiosity in American golf architecture.
