Richland Country Club shares its earliest roots with Belle Meade Country Club: both descend from the Nashville Golf Club, chartered in 1901 following a meeting at the Maxwell House Hotel. The club changed its name to Richland Country Club in 1920 and played on a Donald Ross-laid-out course (1921) at an earlier site before relocating in 1988 to its current location in the hill country south of the city. For that move, the club hired Jack Nicklaus to design a course to the modern standards of the day -- an attribution independently confirmed by Nicklaus Design's own course listing, not just secondary sources. Atlanta-based architect Bill Bergin conducted a significant renovation of the Nicklaus design in 2021, expanding greens and fairways, removing excess trees, and rebuilding grass-faced bunkers.
Richland's competitive pedigree is genuine and dual-era: the club hosted the 1980 U.S. Women's Open (won by Amy Alcott) at its earlier site, and after the 1988 move to the Nicklaus course, hosted the 1995 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. Today the club sits on 170 acres and operates as an invitation-only private club -- membership inquiries are directed through a referring member, and no public pricing is available.
Golf & Course
The current course plays to a par of 72 across 6,952 yards. The 1988 Nicklaus design replaced the club's earlier Donald Ross-laid-out course from its previous site, and the 2021 Bill Bergin renovation was framed as a restoration-minded update -- expanding playing corridors and rebuilding bunkering -- rather than a full re-architecture.
