Abilene Country Club

Abilene Country Club is a private club operating since 1921 with two 18-hole courses (36 holes total). Its original course (opened 1921/1923) is now called the North Course; its second course opened in 1978/1980 as the independently-operated Fairway Oaks Country Club (designed by Ron Garl, PGA Tour host of the Southwest Golf Classic/LaJet Classic 1981-1988) before Abilene Country Club acquired it in 2006 and merged it into today's single facility, now called the South Course. Surrounding neighborhoods -- the Chimney Rock area, including the Fairway Oaks subdivision itself -- are described as having been built around the club.

What to Independently Verify

RESOLVED this pass, after being unresolved across two prior research passes: 'Fairway Oaks Country Club' (also seen as 'Fairway Oaks Golf & Racquet Club') was a genuinely separate, independently operating private club from 1978/1980 until 2006, when Abilene Country Club acquired it and merged it into today's single 36-hole facility. It hosted the PGA Tour's Southwest Golf Classic (under several sponsor names: LaJet Classic 1981-82, LaJet Coors Classic 1983, LaJet Golf Classic 1984, Southwest Golf Classic 1985-87, Gatlin Brothers-Southwest Golf Classic 1988) before the merger. It is NOT a currently operating separate club -- directory listings (Yelp, Facebook, HAR, GolfNow) still using the standalone 'Fairway Oaks Country Club' name are stale/legacy listings for what is now Abilene Country Club's South Course, sharing the same address (34 Fairway Oaks Blvd., Abilene, TX 79606) and phone number ((325) 698-4971) as the main club. Residual naming inconsistency remains across sources (North/South per the club's own site vs. Fairway/Club per several secondary aggregator and directory sources, plus conflicting architect attribution for the original 1921/1923 course -- Williams, Gill & Associates per one source, Leon Howard per another) -- this is a minor labeling question, not an entity-identity question, and does not affect the qualification call. Access type, initiation fee, dues, and waitlist status remain genuinely not publicly available.
