Farmington Country Club traces its clubhouse to one of the more unusual architectural pedigrees in American golf: the east wing of the clubhouse, with its distinctive octagon ends, Tuscan portico, and nine round windows, was designed by Thomas Jefferson around 1802 (while he was in the White House) for the estate's then-owner George Divers, and completed in 1803, on a property whose original house dated to before 1780. In 1927, a group of local businessmen formed a corporation to convert the roughly 1,000-acre Farmington estate into a country club and residential community 'of a quality that would do justice to the historic atmosphere of Albemarle County'; the club opened in May 1929. Nearly a century later, Farmington remains one of Charlottesville's most storied invitation-only clubs, with 28 holes of golf (an 18-hole Main Course dating to 1927 and a shorter 10-hole East Course substantially renovated by Coore & Crenshaw in 2016) and a residential neighborhood built up around the club grounds in waves from the 1920s through the 2000s.

Golf & Course

The Main Course's North and South nines were laid out by architect Fred Findlay in 1927 (18 holes, roughly 6,756 yards, par 70) and hosted the 1993 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. The club's second course, the 10-hole East Course, was renovated in 2016 by Coore & Crenshaw and is positioned as a shorter, faster round (playable in under two hours) rather than a full championship test.

Membership & Access

Does buying a home here include club membership?

No — homeownership does not automatically include membership. See details below.

Membership at Farmington is by invitation only, with Resident memberships for those inside the nine-county area around Albemarle and National memberships for those who live farther away; dues are further split into Comprehensive and Social categories. Farmington does not bundle club membership with home purchase -- buying in the Farmington neighborhood does not include or guarantee club access, and prospective members still go through the club's invitation process independent of where they live.

Living in Farmington Country Club

The Farmington neighborhood grew up around the club in waves -- roughly 4 homes in the 1920s, 12 in the 1930s, 9 in the 1940s, 31 in the 1950s, 26 in the 1960s, 25 in the 1970s, and smaller numbers since, for a total in the range of 120-150 homes depending on source (this record could not resolve the exact current count with confidence). The Farmington Property Owners Association charges HOA dues reported at $990/year plus a $5,000 association transfer fee (2025 figures per a third-party HOA-fee aggregator), covering area maintenance, a master insurance policy, a reserve fund, road maintenance, a private security force, and snow removal.
