Hermitage Country Club is one of Virginia's oldest clubs, founded in Richmond in 1900 and originally sited on what is now the city's Belmont Golf Course (an A.W. Tillinghast design, 1917) before relocating to a larger complex in Manakin-Sabot, eastern Goochland County, in 1977. The move gave the club room for 36 holes: Ed Ault built 27 holes at the new site, and Arthur Hills added a fourth nine in 1989, with the current Manakin and Sabot courses drawing from that combined routing.
Hermitage's defining historical claim is hosting the 1949 PGA Championship, won by Sam Snead over Johnny Palmer -- Snead's win made him the first player to capture the PGA Championship and the Masters in the same year, and the event remains the only men's major championship ever played in Virginia. The club also hosted the PGA Tour Champions' Crestar Classic from 1983 to 1990; its 1988 edition was Arnold Palmer's final professional tour victory. Both are genuinely notable, but both are decades in the past -- Hermitage today functions as a private, member-based country club rather than an active tournament venue.
