Roanoke Country Club traces its origins to March 1899, when a golf group associated with tennis players using courts near the present Christ Episcopal Church began playing on a rudimentary course near present-day South Roanoke. The club was formally incorporated on November 3, 1900. In 1901 it purchased property near the present South Roanoke fire station, with golf links leased from the Crystal Spring Land Company -- but this South Roanoke period was brief: by 1908 the club relocated to its present-day site at 3360 Country Club Drive NW, constructing a clubhouse, tennis courts, and a nine-hole course (designed by Scottish-born professional Alexander Findlay) on the former 53-acre Moomaw Farm property. That site sits in Roanoke's Villa Heights neighborhood, first subdivided in 1910 and bordering Melrose-Rugby, Washington Heights, Fairland, and Miller Court/Arrowood -- a geographically distinct, Northwest Roanoke neighborhood, not South Roanoke (which is in southeast Roanoke, centered on Crystal Spring Avenue near Mill Mountain). The club has operated continuously in Villa Heights since 1908, well over a century.
In 1920, famed architect A.W. Tillinghast (designer of Baltusrol, Winged Foot, Bethpage Black, and other major-championship venues) designed an 18-hole course for the club; combined with the earlier Findlay nine, the club now offers 27 holes across three combinable nine-hole loops. Financially, the club weathered a debt crisis: in 2004, 47 member-investors paid Wachovia Bank roughly $5 million to shoulder club debt, and in 2015 a larger 'RCC Equity Group' of 74 members invested to cancel most of that remaining debt in exchange for an equity position and ownership of the club's real estate -- making Roanoke Country Club a genuine member-owned equity club. Membership has declined over the club's history (from roughly 900 around 1999 to about 448 in more recent trade-press reporting), a trend the club has addressed partly by emphasizing family-friendly programming (fireworks shows, Easter egg hunts) alongside golf.
Golf & Course
27 holes across three combinable nine-hole courses: the original nine designed by Alexander Findlay (1908) and an 18-hole course designed by A.W. Tillinghast (opened 1920) -- Tillinghast also designed or remodeled 15 U.S. Open and PGA Championship venues including Baltusrol, Bethpage Black, and Winged Foot, making this a notable design pedigree for the region.
Membership & Access
Does buying a home here include club membership?
A genuine member-owned equity club: a 2015 buyout by 74 members (the 'RCC Equity Group') retired most of the club's remaining debt in exchange for an ownership stake in the club's real estate, following an earlier 2004 debt arrangement among 47 member-investors. Specific current application process, initiation fee, and waitlist status were not confirmed this session; the only dues figure on record ($545/month full-family, 2018) is historical.
Living in Roanoke Country Club
The club sits inside Villa Heights, one of Roanoke's oldest neighborhoods (first subdivided in 1910), characterized by long-term residents and traditional Cape Cod, ranch, American Foursquare, Colonial Revival, and Tudor Revival homes. This is an established, historic in-town neighborhood that genuinely surrounds the club, though it was not purpose-built as a golf-course development the way some newer communities are -- a real, if organic rather than manufactured, residential relationship.
Lifestyle & Amenities
Indoor and outdoor tennis facilities described as the largest in the Roanoke Valley per club-adjacent sourcing; a recently renovated pool area and dining options round out amenities, alongside periodic family-friendly programming (fireworks, Easter egg hunts).
Location & Surrounding Area
Located at 3360 Country Club Drive NW, in Roanoke's Villa Heights neighborhood (Northwest Roanoke) -- not South Roanoke, which the club left in 1908 and which is a geographically distinct southeast-Roanoke neighborhood. Villa Heights borders Melrose-Rugby, Washington Heights, Fairland, Miller Court/Arrowood, Shenandoah West, and South Washington Heights.
Costs & Fees
Figures below are labeled Current only when the source itself frames them as presently accurate. Everything else is labeled Historical — a source checked today does not make an old fee a current one.
Annual dues
Historical — as of 2018$6,540
Derived from a reported $545/month full-family membership dues figure (2018 sourcing), multiplied by 12 -- historical, not current; the source itself states monthly dues, not an annual figure. Confirm current dues directly with the club.
