Broadmoor Golf Club, founded in 1924 and opened for play in 1927, is one of the oldest and most architecturally significant private clubs in the Pacific Northwest -- an A.V. Macan design built on a 200-acre parcel that had originally belonged to the Puget Mill Company. What sets Broadmoor apart from every other Seattle golf address is not the course alone but the enclave around it: an 85-acre gated residential community with its own private, non-public roadways, a structure the Seattle Times called 'one of the unmatched features of this community' when it was announced in 1924, and one that local histories describe as never having been repeated anywhere else within Seattle's city limits. Some of the city's largest estates and mansions front directly onto the fairways.
For a golf-oriented buyer, Broadmoor represents the closest thing Seattle proper has to a true country-club-enclave model, though the two systems -- neighborhood access and club membership -- are legally and administratively separate. Buying inside the gates puts a homeowner behind Broadmoor's private security and roads and subject to its homeowners association, but Broadmoor Golf Club membership is a distinct, sponsorship-based process layered on top, not an automatic benefit of the address. The club's golf pedigree includes hosting exhibitions and tournaments featuring Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus during the 1945 Seattle $10,000 Open and the 1962 Seattle Open tied to the World's Fair.
Buyers should not confuse this club with Colorado's Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs, an unrelated large-scale resort/hotel property already documented elsewhere on this site; the two share a name and nothing else.
Golf & Course
The course was designed by Arthur Vernon 'A.V.' Macan, the Irish-born, Victoria BC-based architect responsible for several of the Pacific Northwest's oldest private clubs (Fircrest, Inglewood, and others among them). Broadmoor opened for play in April 1927 on a routing that remains largely intact today. Its tournament history includes hosting stars of the game's golden and modern eras during two headline mid-century Seattle events -- the 1945 Seattle $10,000 Open and the 1962 Seattle Open, held in conjunction with that year's World's Fair -- drawing crowds reported at roughly 6,000 for the pro-am alone.
