Upper Montclair Country Club

Upper Montclair Country Club carries a genuinely unique national distinction: it is the only golf club in the United States confirmed to have hosted professional tournaments on all three major U.S. tours -- the PGA Tour, the LPGA Tour, and the Champions Tour (then the Senior PGA Tour). Beginning with the Thunderbird Classic in 1962 and running through 2009, the club's 27-hole course hosted a long run of professional events, including the Dow Jones Open Invitational, the Chrysler-Plymouth Classic, the NFL Golf Classic, and the LPGA's Sybase Classic (Founders Cup). That is a flagship-caliber credential even though none of those tournaments are currently active there.

The club's founding traces to 1901, when a small group playing on a rudimentary five-hole course in a Montclair meadow merged with a social organization called the Upper Ten Club. A.W. Tillinghast designed the original 18-hole course and clubhouse that opened in 1928; Robert Trent Jones Sr. led a major 1950s renovation that expanded and reworked the layout into today's 27-hole championship configuration. One important entity-identity note for buyers: despite its name, the club is physically located in Clifton, Passaic County -- not in the Upper Montclair neighborhood of Montclair Township, a separate, distinctly named historic district a few miles away. This research found no confirmed adjacency or relationship between the club and that Montclair neighborhood, and treats them as separate entities rather than assuming a connection from the shared name.
