Fresh Meadow Country Club originally opened in 1923 in the Fresh Meadows section of Queens, with a course designed by A. W. Tillinghast. That original course hosted major championship golf twice in short order -- the 1930 PGA Championship (won by Tommy Armour) and the 1932 U.S. Open (won by Gene Sarazen) -- placing the club among the era's significant tournament venues. Development and tax pressure in postwar New York City led the club to sell its Queens property in 1946, after which the site became a residential neighborhood; the club then purchased the clubhouse and course of the defunct Lakeville Golf & Country Club in Lake Success, its current home.

A prospective member or researcher should be careful not to conflate the current Lake Success course with the site of the club's 1930/1932 major championships -- those were played on the original, since-redeveloped Tillinghast course in Queens.

Golf & Course

Original 1923 Tillinghast-designed course (Queens, sold 1946, since redeveloped residentially) hosted the 1930 PGA Championship and 1932 U.S. Open. The current Lake Success course, acquired in 1946, is a physically different layout from the former Lakeville Golf & Country Club.
